Filing taxes online works well for me

-

Re: “Why does Ottawa make it so hard to file taxes online?” (Letter of the Day, April 15)

I did not really agree with John Hendrykowski’s letter, but I let it slide, because that is his opinion.

But after reading the Letters section on Tuesday, I felt obliged to say something.

I have been doing my taxes and the taxes of others for many years. I have some accounting experience, so I thought, how hard could it be? Last year, my brother and I decided to buy tax software at a big box store, and give it a shot. There are a couple out there, so I am pretty sure they cannot be all that different. For $20, I received a program that lets me do eight individual returns — that is, eight federal and eight provincial. That turns out to be $2.50 per person! It was easy, just fill in the blanks — seriously. And since I went online last year to purchase two additional submissions, they sent me an email for this year so I could download 2012 without leaving my house.

Now, isn’t it worth $2.50 to know that after you file online, your refund will be in your bank account in 10 or 11 days? It has happened two years in a row. I will never do paper again. Daniel T. Murphy
