Richelieu Valley teen wins Quebec crown
Hugo Bernard got the job done this time.
The 18-year-old from Richelieu Valley won the Quebec men’s amateur golf championship on Friday, shooting a 1-over-par 73 on the Blue Course at Royal Montreal for a total of 287 and a five-stroke victory.
A member of the Canadian National development squad, Bernard had tied for second in the Alexander of Tunis at Royal Ottawa earlier this month and finished second alone in the Duke of Kent at Royal Quebec last weekend.
Duke of Kent winner Mathieu Perron, from Laval-sur-le-Lac, shot a 74 on Friday and tied for second at 292 with Curtis Dancy (77) of Smiths Falls.
Rivermead’s Robert Mustard (78–299) was next best among players from the National Capital Region in a tie for sixth.
On Thursday, the Quebec junior golf champions were determined at Princeville.
Valérie Tanguay of St-Hyacinthe won her second consecutive girls’ title, shooting a third-round 79 for 227, two ahead of Océane Jacques (74) of Royal Quebec. Kanata’s Hailey Wilson (86–258) was 13th, Etienne Papineau of Royal Bromont was the boys champion after shooting a 68 for a four-day sum of 281, 13 better than Pinegrove’s Raphael Lapierre-Messier. Hawkesbury’s Jean-Luc Theoret (69–297) was third, and Rivermead’s Stéphane Paré (77–301) tied for sixth.
At Tottenham, Ont., Robyn Doig of Seaforth won the provincial women’s championship after shooting a 73 for 217. Kiersten Klekner-Alt (79–238) was the best of a handful of Ottawa-area competitors with her tie for 12th. At Windsor, Jake McNulty of the Toronto Granite Club shot a final-round 66 for a total of 278 and victory in the Ontario junior boys championship. Renfrew’s Cooper Brown (74–295) was tied for 23rd.
