Vaudreuil-soulanges remains homogeneou­s despite growth

A mere 8% in region are visible minorities

Vaudreuil-Soulanges continues to grow, but the population remains relatively homogeneou­s, the latest figures from the National Household Survey show.

Of a total of 137,880 residents, only 14,755 were born outside the country, making up 10.7 per cent of the total population.

Visible minorities make up just eight per cent of the population. By comparison, in Montreal immigrants and visible minorities make up about one third of the population.

Most immigrants in the Off-Island region hail from Europe, with the largest immigrant groups coming from the United Kingdom, France and Romania.

India is the only non-European country to crack the Top 5 for the region.

Among the towns, Hudson seems to have the largest percentage of immigrants at 19.7 per cent. It is also the town with the lowest percentage of visible minorities, as more than half of the town’s immigrants were born in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Hudson also has very few nonChristi­an religions, with just 95 Jewish people, and no Muslims, Hindus or Sikhs.

The town with the lowest proportion of immigrants is St-Lazare at 10.4 per cent. That town also has the lowest unemployme­nt rate at 4.4 per cent. Hudson has the highest unemployme­nt rate at 8.2 per cent. It also has the highest average income at $62,789. The town with the lowest average income is Île-Perrot at $37,676, which also had the lowest median income. N.D.I.P. had the highest median income at $39,969.

As for the other towns in the region, immigrants make up 13.5 per cent of residents in Île-Perrot, 13.9 per cent in Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, 14.3 per cent in Vaudreuil-Dorion and 16 per cent in Pincourt.

Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot had the highest percentage of people driving (or being driven) to work at 92.4 per cent, while Hudson residents were most apt to take public transit.

A total of 85.8 per cent of Hudson residents drove or were driven to work.

The remainder used public transit, walked, cycled or took some other mode of transporta­tion. Population: 32,585 Immigrant population: Total 4,670.
