Invoking Jefferson was chutzpah
I am astonished by the chutzpah shown by Bernard Drainville and Jean-François Lisée in their letter to The New York Times. How dare they compare their Charter of Pants to Thomas Jefferson’s inspired declaration of separation of church and state? They may as well compare War and Peace to Mad magazine!
I challenge them to send a copy of their idiotic, pointless legislation to the American Civil Liberties Union or any good U.S. constitutional lawyer for a test case. Any bets on the verdict? And since they chose to invoke the words of Jefferson, here are two more of his quotes worth remembering:
“It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”
“We have no right to prejudice another in his civil enjoyments because he is of another church.”
