Vendôme station must be accessible

- Patricia Winston Montreal

Re: “Métro upgrade won’t include wheelchair access, STM says” (Gazette, Nov. 20)

In all my long years of observing federal, provincial and municipal boondoggles, I would be hard pressed to find one more short-sighted than the present plans set out by the STM for the Vendôme métro station to accommodate the expected increase in passenger use when the MUHC superhospital opens. Widened stairs, new walkways, and tunnels will be of little use to anyone with reduced mobility or to the elderly. I would plead with those charged with the planning of the station to consider the majority of those who will be using it. An escalator, moving walkways similar to those at airports would be a distinct improvement. Surely now is the time to make these changes, not 10 years from now when further construction would be required.
