CANADIENS MARK ANNIVERSARIES
There were some anniversaries involving the Canadiens this week. Wednesday was the 13th anniversary of Michel Therrien’s NHL coaching debut with Montreal. The Habs hired him to replace Alain Vigneault after the team stumbled to a 5-13-2 start. When asked if he had any memories of his first stint with the team, Therrien, 50, said: “I had more hair then.” Friday marked the 10-year anniversary of the NHL’s first regular-season outdoor game. The Heritage Classic pitted the Canadiens against the Edmonton Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium. A crowd of 57,167 braved freezing conditions to watch the Canadiens win 4-3. The Habs’ boutique reported a spike in tuque sales after José Theodore wore one over his goalie’s mask. “Every guy in here knows how special this moment is,” then-Canadiens defenceman Sheldon Souray said. “It’s something that we can look back on at the end of our careers and be proud that we were a part of.” Former colleague Red Fisher had different memories of the game. He came home from Edmonton with pneumonia.
