Police to probe fatal SQ shooting of teen in Laurentians
The Montreal police have been called in to investigate a police shooting in the Laurentians that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old male.
A Montreal police spokesman, Constable Simon Delorme, said the victim was declared dead hours after having been shot early Wednesday afternoon by a member of the Sûreté du Québec in Ste-Adèle, a town 65 kilometres north of Montreal.
The provincial public security minister ordered that the Montreal police investigate the shooting because, as per provincial legislation, no police force can investigate a shooting involving its own officers that ends in death or injury.
Delorme said the 17-year-old was shot while an SQ officer was investi-

gating a report the provincial police received about a stolen car.
“When he arrived on the scene he tried to corner the suspect, who was inside the vehicle. (The 17-yearold) made a manoeuvre to (attempt to) run over the police officer and at one point the officer opened fire in his direction,” Delorme said while adding the young man’s death was confirmed later by “medical authorities.”
“The investigation is ongoing and investigators with the (Montreal police) major crimes unit are meeting with witnesses to gather information from each one and attempt to put together the sequence of events with precision.”
The shooting occurred just after 1 p.m. close to École secondaire Augustin-Norbert-Morin, a high school in Ste-Adèle. The proximity of the shooting to the school caused some concern among parents of the students inside and a special phone line was set up to deal with any questions.
No one inside the school was injured in the shooting.
Delorme said the officer was not physically injured, but had to be taken to a hospital to be treated for shock.
Delorme said he did not know if the car the 17-year-old was driving struck the officer.
