Quebec Liberals are at the cliff ’s edge

-

Re: “Liberals need to get their act together on Bill 60” (Editorial, Jan. 21)

The title of this editorial is much too generous toward the Quebec Liberal Party. A more fitting title would have been “Liberals need to get their act together,” since Bill 60 is but one example of the poor showing of this political party on the Quebec landscape.

Since Philippe Couillard became its leader on March 17, 2013, the party has seemingly disappeared from view, except when it has committed errors in its few statements, which often had to be clarified, and then reclarified.

Prior to his being chosen, he and his party were leading Quebec polls in terms of voter intentions but, since then, their respective popularities have weakened to the point that the Quebec electorate would now rather support a sovereignist party, which has made numerous errors and has created serious Quebec divisiveness, rather than a party that is invisible in the news media.

The current Quebec Liberal Party could easily justify adopting the reasoned position of the 2008 Bouchard-Taylor commis- sion report on the reasonable accommodation of religious and cultural beliefs but it has not, preferring on principle to ignore it.

Now, it is being shunned by a majority of Quebecers.

Leaders do not often lead their troops over the proverbial cliff, but the Quebec Liberals are now at its edge.
