Let’s reject the politics of division
While the anglo community’s fears and loathing of the PQ may be resurfacing right now, threatening to separate Montreal from Quebec is both misguided and counter-intuitive. If we are to learn anything from the wars of the 20th century, it is that every time we try to draw a line around a national group, more strife
» occurs in the process than can justify it.
Montreal is home to federalists and separatists alike, English and French, Jews and Italians, Koreans and Greeks, and so on.
The PQ’s politics of div- ision succeed because they know our community is so happy and willing to play its part in the tug of war.
If we wish to make the PQ an irrelevant party, then it is our job to change the game. Keep making friends with our francophone fellow Quebecers. Let’s help demonstrate that Quebec is completely at home in Canada, and that we can build a community together.
