Potential voters feel unfairly shunned
Some stories from people who believe they have been unfairly rejected from the voting list:
Tian Ren Fang: Born in Quebec, she is not a student, but recently moved downtown from Brossard. She went to register at Alexis Nihon and was refused. Although she has a medicare card, it is expired, and she was told her Hydro bill and passport weren’t adequate, even for a change of address for a registered voter. “It doesn’t make sense to me,” she said. “It makes me wonder if I’m being discriminated against. I thought I had everything I needed but they said it was a domicile issue.” Arielle VanIderstine: She is a first-year McGill University student, originally from P.E.I., who showed up to register with a temporary medicare card (which she was able to obtain by saying she was moving here permanently) and was accepted at first on March 18. However, she was called back the next day and told she was being refused. She went back this week with a note saying her medicare card was coming, and was told it still isn’t enough, that she isn’t domiciled yet. “I can’t vote and I feel this is pure discrimination against students,” she said. “I was crying and pleading, I told them I’m moving here permanently. I don’t know what else I have to do.”
