Simon Brault to leave National Theatre School
Simon Brault, who has been with the National Theatre School for more than 32 years — including the last 17 as CEO — will be leaving that institution at the end of its current academic year to head up the Canada Council for the Arts.
Brault will occupy a newly created role at the Canada Council for the Arts — director and CEO — as of June 26, 2014, for a period of five years.
In a statement, Brault said he is leaving the NTS “with the firm conviction of having done my utmost for the development of the school by consolidating and infusing it with relevance and a resilience that too few of our institutions possess.”
Bernard Amyot, the chairman of the NTS’s board of directors, announced that in the coming days he will head up a selection committee, which will search across the country for a new CEO for the Montrealbased school.
Brault won’t be a newcomer to the Canada Council for the Arts: he was named the organization’s vice-president in 2004, and in 2009 was renewed for another five years in that position Brault is also the founder of Journées de la culture and a founding member of Culture Montréal, as well as president of that organization since 2002.
Canada’s Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Shelly Glover, commended Brault’s appointment, lauding his work.
