Time for a change of companion?

-

There’s trouble in the Tardis.

British press reports are suggesting Doctor Who costar Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald, will be leaving the popular science fiction series at the end of the season in December. So far, the BBC has been tight-lipped about any Time Lord turmoil.

Coleman has been with the smash show — which airs on Space in Canada — for the past 18 months.

A BBC spokesperson told The Independent it does not comment on issues relating to show talent.

Sources have told the Daily Mirror that Coleman will leave the show at the end of the rebooted show’s eighth season Christmas special.

“The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out,” a source told The Mirror. “She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”

The source said: “It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

During her tenure, Coleman has battled Cybermen and Ice Warriors and helped save the Doctor’s home planet of Gallifrey. Last year she starred in the 50th-anniversary special The Day of the Doctor with Doctors of days past, including David Tennant and John Hurt.

Coleman, 28, joined the show when Matt Smith — the 11th Doctor — still ruled the roost. Her character was initially an enigma, playing different versions of the same character.

Peter Capaldi is set to make his debut as the immortal Time Lord on Aug. 23.

The Mirror said the decision for a change in companion for the Doctor was “mutual.”

The highly anticipated eighth season will see the introduction of a new recurring character called Danny Pink — a teacher at Coal Hill School where Clara works.

Meanwhile, Capaldi has said he hopes to inject more mystery into his Doctor — and says it was his lifelong ambition to portray the timetravelling hero.

“This show is part of my DNA,” Capaldi told The Independent.

“It’s a very unusual story that somebody who was so into it would end up playing this role. It was such an unlikely event that I never considered it happening to myself.
