AMERICAN SNIPER (13+) Bradley Cooper stars as Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with more than 250 recorded kills. Director Clint Eastwood wants to turn Kyle’s story into standard hero archetype, complete with acts of self-sacrifice and incredible courage – but the conflict in the Middle East doesn’t really lend itself to standard patriotic claptrap and Eastwood’s movie feels like it’s forcing old-fashioned values into a modern vessel, and nothing fits – except Bradley Cooper’s rodeo Wranglers. 134 mins. Drenched in cinematic craftwork and designed to appear as a single take, the director’s ambitions may sit front and centre, but that’s the point of this self-absorbed backstage tour of the creative process: It wants to wake us up to the real drama that is life, and it succeeds. 119 mins.
