Former mayor Tremblay knew about illegal party financing, UPAC says
According to documents obtained by Radio- Canada and La Presse, the Unité permanente anticorruption says it has “reasonable cause” to believe former Montreal mayor Gérald Tremblay knew about the existence of a system of illegal donations to his party, Union Montreal. Radio- Canada says UPAC was looking for proof of this during a search on July 29. UPAC’s statements come from an affidavit filed with the court to get a warrant to search the former mayor’s Outremont home. It includes statements from witnesses met between 2011 and July 21, 2015. None of these allegations have been proven in court and Tremblay has not been charged. Tremblay has always maintained he had no knowledge of illegal financing of his party. Radio- Canada reports UPAC said it was searching for proof of corruption, conspiracy, abuse of trust, fraud and use of false documents.
