Mistresses wraps season with dramatic finale

- MELISSA HANK

MISTRESSES Season finale Thursday, CTV/CTV Two/ABC

We knew Joss didn't kill Luca. Calista knew Joss didn't kill Luca. And now the cops do too.

Last week on Mistresses, Calista (Jennifer Esposito) finally confessed that she murdered her husband, exonerating Joss (Jes Macallan). April (Rochelle Aytes) found out Marc (Rob Mayes) had been drinking again, and Vivian (Sonja Bennett) collapsed in a well-groomed pile on the floor.

Honestly, on a scale from zero to sudsy, Mistresses is a charity car wash on sorority row.

With the ABC drama wrapping its third season Thursday, Macallan spoke about her character's stint in prison, Alyssa Milano leaving the show — which relocated filming to Vancouver from Los Angeles this season — and the upcoming finale:

Q Joss’s storyline has been so unexpected and dramatic. What was your reaction to her going to jail?

A It was so great to go completely left field. I really enjoyed the prison stuff. It's funny — if you talk to Yunjin (Kim), who was on Lost for so long and filming in Hawaii without makeup, she was so excited to be on our show, where she got to be all dolled up all the time. I was the reverse. I was so thankful to show up to work and have 20 minutes in the hair and makeup chair and be done. And just to throw that blue jumper on for a couple of episodes.

Q What can you tease about the finale?

A I think it's shocking. It's definitely dark. Even shooting it, it gave me chills. A lot of characters' season arcs are wrapped up — but it's not as a series finale by any means. Decisions are made certain characters are kind of left there and you're like, holy moly — what is happening right now?

Q At the end of last season, Alyssa Milano left the show and Jennifer Esposito came in. How was that transition for the cast?

A I don't want to say it was hard, because there are hardships in the world and filming a TV show isn't one of them. But it was an adjustment, for sure. We'd all become a little family in L.A., and then she had to leave and be a mama. We're so proud and respectful of that, but it was a hole and obviously fans miss her and we miss her.

But then came in a firecracker. Jennifer came in and really made it her own, made some really bold choices. I really enjoyed our dynamic onscreen. She was just this sassy, sassy character that brought depth and a different colour to the show.
