WINES OF THE WEEK
UNDER $18 EVERYDAY DRINKING Toscana Igt 2013, Casa Boschino, San Fabiano Calcinaia, Italy red, $14.70, SAQ #
12592832: Organic. Very good for the price. Lots of fruit, with cherry and blackberry, a leathery note and a touch of spice on the finish. Acids are racy, tannins have grip. Under $15 and organic? Wow. Excellent.
Residual sugar: 1.9 g/L. Serve at 16C. Drink now.
Food pairing idea: Veal parmesan, pizza with olives, basil and sun-dried tomatoes. $ 18-$ 23 MID-PRICED MARVEL Douro 2013, Duorum, Portugal red, $19.95, SAQ # 11510102: Much like the great 2012, and arguably a touch more refined. The fruit is delicious with dried blackberry and dark plum. Tannins have some give, but right now the wine needs an hour or so in a carafe to loosen up a bit. Not going to be sipping this by the pool, but with a piece of meat, excellent.
Residual sugar: 3.3 g/L. Serve at 18C. Drink now-2018.
Food pairing idea: Steak on the grill. $23 AND UP FOR A TREAT Sauvignon blanc 2013, Marlborough, Seresin, New Zealand white, $24, SAQ # 12055228: Organic. One of New Zealand’s best sauvignon blancs. Aromatics fool you as you get sweet green pepper and a hint of citrus on the nose, but then it morphs into lime leaf with just a hint of the bitter lime rind. Dry and lengthy on the finish. Really interesting.
Residual sugar: 2.3 g/L. Serve at 8-10 C. Drink now-2017.
Food pairing idea: Apéritif, spring rolls with mint, lighter fish.
