2016 MINI CLUBMAN

- David Booth

What is it? Absent for almost a year from Canadian showrooms, this is the new 2016 Mini Clubman. Measuring 4,260 millimetres stem to stern, the Clubman is longer than its predecessor and, at 1,800 mm, wider as well. Compared to the standard five-door Mini hatchback, the Clubman is positively outsized; it is 270 mm longer and 90 mm wider, resulting in a noticeably more spacious interior. The cargo capacity is a maxi — for a Mini — 360 litres.

Why does it matter? Because it goes like stink! Base Clubmans may be powered by BMW’s 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that’s only good for a 9.1-second zeroto-100 km/h time, but Cooper S editions add an extra cylinder for a maximum of 189-hp and 207 pound-feet of torque (221 with overboost), good enough for a 7.2-second sprint to 100 klicks. The Cooper S comes standard with the six-speed manual but also available is Mini’s new eightspeed Steptronic transmission, which, thanks to its Launch Control system, is a tenth of a second quicker to 100 km/h.

Like so many current cars, the new Clubman uses a centreconsole-mounted rotary switch to offer distinctive driving modes. Besides the standard MID mode, SPORT enhances throttle and steering response and the Steptronic transmission shifts noticeably quicker. Meanwhile, in GREEN mode, throttle application is gentler and the transmission upshifts earlier for better fuel economy. When is it coming? Spring of 2016 Should you buy it? Yes, if you like your Minis super-sized. A regular Cooper S might be better if you like your Mini in a regular cup.
