Sleepless nights, endless phone calls and an emptied bank account are all part of being friends with one of Canada’s most notorious killers.

A pen pal and confidant of Luka Magnotta describes it as a complicated and exhausting “psychological game.”

The former porn actor serving a life sentence for killing and carving up a man, then mailing his body parts across the country, sends and receives lots of letters in prison in Quebec.

“He has hundreds of fans,” the friend told the Toronto Sun. “But there are about 15 or so who he lets in.”

There’s a Luka Magnotta Facebook page and groups around the world that regularly correspond with and even meet with the lockedup murderer.

“They are not advertised, but there are regular meetings of people concerned about Luka,” a source said.

The friend who spoke with the Sun receives regular letters from Magnotta and visits the killer behind bars in Quebec.

Magnotta often talks and writes in a playful, seductive way, the friend says, with lines like: “Did you get any Valentines? Everyone needs to get a little love on Valentine’s Day!”

But the letters show he can also be very demanding.

He wants things. He expects things. And he’ll be upset if he doesn’t get them.

Sometimes he’s passive aggressive, other times very direct.

“If he refuses his meds, there is bad Luka,” the friend said. “He is a whole different person when he is on his medication.”

He’s always working an angle, and what he’s most interested in is money. Inmates can buy a variety of goods at the prison store, including clothes, food, movies and phone cards.

Money means power in the big house.

Some friends have sent Magnotta thousands of dollars. In one case, Magnotta said he needed money for dental work, so the friend deposited $1,200 in his prison account.

“I am not sure if it was used for the dentist,” the friend told the Sun.

Other times, he’s looking for treats and comforts. Beauty products seem to be very important to the former model and escort.

“Have you seen Cindy Crawford’s ‘meaningful Beauty products.’ See if you can order some for me, it’s only $50. Your the best. xoxoxo. I told you that when in Paris I was searching for the same doctor who helped her with the products but he wasn’t available.”

Despite the obvious manipulation, Magnotta’s letters are effective.

The friend claims to have given Magnotta more than $5,000 for his many needs.

“Crafty is the best word to describe him,” the friend said. “Very crafty.”
