Service cuts affect the poorest

-

Re: “Daycare workers decry proposed government cuts” (Montreal Gazette, Feb. 2) I read once again, as I have repeatedly in these last few months, about what the government has decided are necessary cuts to what I consider important public services: 1,500 fewer elective operations; hospitals understaffed and workers stressed out by the workload; and now, daycares that take care of our future citizens are having to cut food.

Why do I never read about our government fat cats cutting their own budgets? What about the food quality in their cafeterias, their salaries, their bonuses? Why do the poorest and the most vulnerable always get stiffed?

My husband and I have only our government pensions to live on. This year, we got a $1.50 increase from the federal government, and the provincial gave us 50 cents. We are now perusing the papers trying to decide which exotic place we will be going to try to spend all that extra cash. Donna Held, Snowdon
