Loire Valley Sauvignon blanc has zest
Sauvignon blanc has become a true international grape variety. Aromatics account for the biggest differences between them. There is always a “green” element: It can be as subtle as freshly cut grass or with vegetal notes of green peppers, especially jalapenos in the case of New Zealand’s version of the grape.
The fruit profile tends toward citrus notes, which can range from lemon to more ripe pink grapefruit. But in France, and especially in the Loire Valley, sauvignon blanc typically has more of a grassy herbal note, showing lemon/lime and white grapefruit notes. Here is a great example.
Vin de France 2014, Sauvignon Blanc, S. de La Sablette, $11.55, France white, SAQ # 12525234:
Aromatic without going overboard. Notes of grass and rosemary. The fruit is very citrus, with lime and white grapefruit. Nice and dry on the finish without being overly acidic. Very good when considering the price. Residual sugar: 2.7 g/L. Serve at 8C. Drink now. Food pairing idea: Apéritif, fresh goat cheese, quiche with asparagus.
