Habs fans need not sit and take it

Re: “A cheer for Habs fans” ( Editorial, Feb. 5)

With all that is going on with the Habs these days, the last thing this fan needs is a lecture from the Montreal Gazette about how a good fan is to behave.

The Habs’ fan base is not Toronto or Edmonton, where the fans are inured to mediocrity. We, in Montreal, rightly demand a decent team to hit the ice, not one caught in an Icarus- like fall. We’ve already given up the dream of a Cup every few years, or at least one a decade. All we want is a contender. This current team has proven, in spades, that it isn’t one.

We fans are wounded, our hopes dashed. If management doesn’t respond well, guess what, we’ll go elsewhere. Tickets aren’t being sold. Bars aren’t full on game nights. Merch is still sitting on the shelves. TV and radio ratings are down.

Are we fans just supposed to sit there and take it? Keep doling out our hard- earned cash to an organization that cares only about their bottom- line and not the team on the ice?

We’re feistier than that in Montreal. We fight back. And that’s part of the reason that this team is the most decorated in professional hockey. Michael Hind, Pointe- St- Charles
