Brownstein acclaimed as Côte- St- Luc mayor
Longtime Côte- St- Luc councillor Mitchell Brownstein has been acclaimed as the city ’s new mayor after no one sought to challenge him for the job.
Brownstein, who was first elected as a city councillor in 1990, will take over the position vacated by former mayor Anthony Housefather, who resigned in November 2015 to run in last year’s federal election and was elected as Liberal MP for Mount Royal.
Since then, two councillors have filled in as acting mayor of Côte- StLuc — Glenn Nashen, followed by Dida Berku.
Brownstein will be sworn in as mayor Monday night as the first order of business at a council meeting.
The suburb, which has more than 32,000 residents, was scheduled to have a byelection on April 10 but Brownstein was the only person to file his candidacy before the deadline at 4: 30 p. m. on Friday.
Côte- St- Luc will still hold a byelection on April 10 to decide who will replace Brownstein as councillor for District 7 of the city.
