Society doesn’t need more cars
Re: “Self-driving cars will worsen traffic jams, but nobody will care” (Driving, March 14) I am quite afraid that selfdriving cars could do more harm than good. First and foremost, if self-driving cars catch on, employment for thousands upon thousands of truck drivers, delivery drivers and taxi drivers might be eventually wiped out.
Second, self-driving cars would tempt those who are visually impaired, physically handicapped or navigationally inept to also buy cars instead of using public transportation, thereby only increasing traffic congestion. Roads would have to be widened and parking lots expanded.
Self-driving cars will strengthen the cult of the car, and society simply does not need that. Manish Patwari, Montreal
