I do not know whether the calèche horses in Old Montreal are happy or sad — I cannot get inside their heads — but they do appear to be sturdy working horses.

What I do know is that Old Montreal features many finedining restaurants, where people happily dine every day on foie gras, giant steaks, and, yes, surely in some cases, horse meat, while they discuss the sad plight of the poor calèche horses! Nancy Beaudin, Rivière-des-Prairies
