*THE AGE OF SHADOWS (G)

There’s a tense and bloody standoff in a train in this Korean spy thriller, set in the 1920s when Korea was occupied by Japan, and train travel was at its most decadent. But writer/director Kim Jee-woon packs much more into this story of a cat-andmouse/bromance between a police captain and a resistance leader. 139 mins. CK ★★★½ In Korean with English subtitles

BLAIR WITCH (13+)

You know that old horror-movie gimmick where the hero would be skulking down an ominous hallway when suddenly he’d be surprised by a pouncing, mewling cat? That sort of thing happens constantly here, amplified, irritatingly. Blair Witch is another carnival of jump-scares, despite the technological leaps. 89 mins. WIRE ★★½

Not much feels fresh in this third outing for the lovable London lonelyheart (Renée Zellweger), 15 years after the first. *THE DRESSMAKER (G)

Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) is the titular dressmaker, cosmopolitan and chic, returning home to small-town Dungatar, on the Australian outback, after a 25 year exile — one forced upon her as punishment for the supposed murder of a classmate in elementary school. More often the intrusions of the comic on the dramatic aren’t so much offensive as merely strange, which nevertheless torpedoes any hope of the audience taking this very seriously. 118 mins. THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS (G)

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander make a great couple (for real too) in this adaptation of M.L. Steadman’s novel about a lighthouse keeper and his wife who find a baby. It’s got one eye on the coming awards seasons, the other on delivering wonderfully weepy entertainment. Expect success on both fronts. 130 mins. CK ★★★★

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (13+)

Antoine Fuqua’s remake of the 1960 western (itself copied from 1954’s Seven Samuria) should really be called The Magnificent Two and the So-So Five. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt head up a posse of gunmen defending an old western town, but the rest of the cast are thinly drawn, and the big battles are choppily shot and edited. 132 mins. The outrageous, larger-than-life true story is about a pair of boorish entrepreneurial milquetoasts from Miami named Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, whose exploits furnishing the U.S. military with discount munitions during the War on Terror was duly chronicled by the reporter Guy Lawson in an article for Rolling Stone.
