Alleged ISIL supporter broke ankle monitor

- STEWART BELL

• An Ottawa man the RCMP says it fears may engage in terrorism allegedly broke off his electronic ankle bracelet over the weekend, prompting police to take him into custody for the second time in two weeks.

Tevis Gonyou-McLean, 24, an alleged supporter of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, was arrested Saturday. He has been charged with breaching his release conditions, uttering threats and mischief under $5,000.

The Ottawa Police Service said Monday the mischief charge was for removing the GPS monitoring system Gonyou-McLean was required to wear after his arrest on a terrorism peace bond three months ago.

A former Ottawa pizza shop employee, GonyouMcLean was arrested Aug. 12 on three terrorism offences. He was also charged with uttering a threat, but, instead of seeking to lay terrorism charges, police asked the court for a peace bond.

The man was released with a long list of conditions, including that he not travel, possess weapons or communicate with suspected members of the Ottawa ISIL network.

But on Oct. 25, GonyouMcLean was charged with four counts of breach of recognizance as well as mischief for allegedly damaging his ankle bracelet. He was held in custody for several days and released again last Monday.

He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a hearing on the charges stemming from Saturday’s arrest.
