Would a nun’s habit be treated like hijab?

-

Re: “Woman seeks legal clarification after being asked to remove hijab” (Montreal Gazette, Nov. 25) Rania El-Alloul was denied an appearance in court because she was wearing a hijab. A Superior Court justice later could not guarantee that she would be allowed to wear her hijab during future court appearances.

Here’s the question: If she had shown up in court wearing a full nun’s habit, would she have been asked to remove her headgear? I really, somehow, doubt it.

And that’s the question to ask when trying to determine whether the request was culturally/racially charged in the first place. Karen Schell, Pointe-Claire
