WINES OF THE WEEK

-

UNDER $18: EVERYDAY DRINKING Shiraz 2015, Reserva, Luis Felipe Edwards, Chile red, $14.30, SAQ # 10754181. Like the 2014, walks the line nicely between a more new world shiraz expression with its ripe fruit and soft tannins, and a more classic French syrah with its florals and graphite mineral quality and dry finish. Aromatic complexity, focused and a lengthy finish. Grape variety: shiraz Residual sugar: 3.4 g/l. Serve at 16C. Drink now-2018.

Food pairing suggestion:

Steak with spice on the grill. $18-$23: MID-PRICED MARVEL Langhe 2014, Nebbiolo, Beni di Batasiolo, Italy red, $18.10, SAQ # 13089809. Nebbiolo is a unique grape but not the easiest to understand due to its bright acids and grippy tannins. This is an exceptional introduction to the grape. It’s a touch richer, the tannins more forgiving, yet undeniably nebbiolo. Great job at a very good price. Grape variety: nebbiolo.

Residual sugar: 3 g/l. Serve at 16C. Drink now.

Food pairing suggestion:

Veal or pork roast with mushrooms. $23 AND UP: FOR A TREAT Anjou 2015, Mosaïk, PithonPaillé, France white, $26.70, SAQ # 10525345. Loire chenin blanc might be the world’s most versatile white wine. Manages to show explosive fruit, in this case a mix of orange rind and lemons, with body, length, minerality, and remarkably fresh. Every sip seems to offer up a different variation on the theme. Drink it now, drink it five years from now — guaranteed it will be one of the more unique and tasty wines you have drunk. Grape variety: chenin blanc.

Residual sugar: 1.9 g/l. Serve at 10C. Drink now-2022.

Food pairing suggestion:

Aperitif, seafood curry.
