Sherman set off by haunting memory

Seahawks star, coach talk it out

- BILL LANKHOF

Richard Sherman has a way of getting into people’s heads. Even his own coach’s.

Sherman had a busy night Thursday against the Rams. The Seattle cornerback smacked into the helmet of Rams quarterback Jared Goff, putting the 2016 No. 1 draft pick into concussion protocol.

But the biggest discussion Friday lingered over Sherman’s sideline confrontation with his own head coach, Pete Carroll.

As for Goff, “he seemed OK, but he’s probably tough enough to disguise it,” Rams interim coach John Fassel said. “He’s in the protocol, so we’ll see how it is.”

Carroll, meantime, met for an hour Friday with Sherman to discuss the sideline outburst during the Seahawks’ division-clinching 24-3 win. Sherman got into a screaming sideshow with Carroll and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, after they called a pass play from the Rams’ one-yard line.

“I just spent an hour with him, and we’ve been through it,” Carroll told ESPN Seattle.

The play call evidently brought up the raw nightmare memories of Super Bowl XLIX, when a Wilson pass from the one-yard line was intercepted, leading to a New England win. Carroll admitted that loss still haunts many of the players.

“That (play call Thursday) just stirred up something, and it caught Sherm wrong and he went off.”

Sherman admitted the flashback to the lost Super Bowl was the catalyst.

“I’m upset about us throwing from the one,” Sherman said. “I was letting (Carroll) know. We’ve already seen how that goes.”

Goff, meantime, continues to get hit far too often, and too hard. He was sacked four times, then got knocked out of bounds on Sherman’s smack when he didn’t slide or step out of bounds.

PETERSON’S BACK

The waiting and wondering is over. Adrian Peterson is back.

The Vikings running back announced Friday he’ll play Sunday against the Colts, in an earlier than expected return from knee surgery.

Peterson will play with a titanium knee brace.

FLOYD’S SECOND COMING?

Bill Belichick admits he isn’t sure what the Patriots got in claiming Michael Floyd off waivers from the Cardinals.

While Floyd may not play Sunday, he will travel with the team to Denver. With New England down to three receivers it won’t be long before Floyd will get a chance to show he belongs.

“We’ll see how it works out,” said Belichick of Floyd, who was waived after being arrested on a DUI charge.

“We’re aware of the (DUI arrest) that came up earlier in the week. We’ll let that legal situation play itself out, but really we’ll just see how it goes. He’s a player that we haven’t had before. We look forward to working with him.”

Floyd, 27, has struggled this season, catching just 33 passes for 446 yards with four touchdowns.
