1. One team in, the other hoping The Canadiens wrapped up a playoff berth Thursday night when they defeated the Florida Panthers 6-2 at the Bell Centre. The Lightning are hoping to join them, but they need wins and some help from other teams. Tampa has a four-game win streak on the go and is three points back of Boston in the race for the final wild-card berth.

2. Secondary scoring The Canadiens’ second line of Paul Byron, Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher produced four goals against Florida. Byron is having a career season with 22 goals — his previous high was 11 last season — while Plekanec and Gallagher have struggled. That might be changing. Gallagher has goals in each of the last two games and collected a career-high four points against the Panthers.

3. Primary scoring Max Pacioretty has also scored in each of the last two games and has reached 35 goals for the third time in four seasons. Since the 2012-13 lockout, only Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has scored more goals than Pacioretty. He says coach Claude Julien has asked him to play a greater defensive role, but the line of Pacioretty, Phillip Danault and Alex Radulov represents the Canadiens’ top offensive threat.

4. The other guys Nikita Kucherov is having a banner year with 38 goals and 42 assists. Defenceman Victor Hedman is a two-way threat with 15 goals and 66 points. A couple of Quebec players are also making key contributions. Jonathan Drouin has sorted out his issues with coach Jon Cooper and has 21 goals, while Alex Killorn, a Lac St. Louis Lions product by way of Harvard, has 18 goals and 16 assists.

5. Injury updates Jordie Benn, who has been the best of the Canadiens’ deadline acquisitions, is on the trip and is day-to-day. Backup goaltender Al Montoya is not with the Canadiens, but Julien said there was a chance he could join the team Monday in Florida or Wednesday in Buffalo. Tampa is still missing Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan on the injured list, while Kucherov and Tyler Johnson are day-today.
