SPRING HAVING SPRUNG ...

... homeowners now think landscaping

- MEGAN MARTIN

With spring-like weather finally here and snow pretty much melted, homeowners are finally getting ready to embark on landscaping projects they’ve been been wanting to tackle. And no matter one’s budget, this year’s trends offer something for everyone, including those looking to repurpose existing materials for a minor touch-up, and those seeking a total overhaul of their property’s exterior.

Organic and rustic materials are expected to be quite popular this spring.

“The trend now is to add warmth to your yard and that often means using wood to create a variety of structures — from decks and pool inserts to fences and pergolas,” said Lee Gregory, project co-ordinator with Groupe Paramount.

“Exotic woods like Ipe are becoming more popular, and overall we’re seeing a little softening from the ultra-modern trend of the last few years. The shapes are still mostly linear, but the choice of materials and colours are slightly less rigid.”

The move toward more natural materials goes hand in hand with using eco-friendly substances in residential landscaping.

“With growing concerns and interest in the environment, you will see a lot of green materials being used,” said Charlene Grabowski, real-estate broker with Proprio Actif. “Raw materials such as rocks, wood, gravel, and pea stone will be popular this year.”

This more natural look is being complemented with sleek touches and contrasting elements such as concrete slabs.

“We’re seeing many slabs for backyard projects that really put an emphasis on texture,” Gregory said. “Ultra-smooth concrete pavers are a buzz, and many lines of gorgeous porcelain slabs are in, too.”

The entire goal of these trends is to create a more livable outdoor space.

“Backyards are really starting to feel like a home’s summer living room,” Gregory said. “That’s how much attention to detail is being considered.”

This type of setup is being sought by buyers on the market as much as it is by existing homeowners, Grabowski said.

“Proper landscaping can be an incredible way to capture a buyer’s interest, and set your home apart from the others on the market,” she said. “It often leads to selling quickly and getting the price you want; landscaping enhances the sales appeal of real estate, and when done properly can increase the value substantially.”

If you’re a homeowner looking into landscaping for the upcoming season, it’s important for even the handiest people to work with the right professionals.

“The HGTV effect can often mislead homeowners into thinking that they’re capable of planning out their own yard entirely,” Gregory said. “They may be competent to do so, but a plan developed from the perspective of an architect can add that fresh set of eyes and help the homeowner think outside the box of their existing space; it’s often what brings the project from good to great.”

Of course a landscaping project, depending on its scale, can become quite expensive, but as long as homeowners respect their budget, there are always creative ways to keep costs down.

For instance, exploring resources like Pinterest and Houzz.com can provide homeowners with some original, cost-saving ideas.

“Keeping things simple, peaceful and elegant can often not only be the best option for your space, it can keep the budget in check,” Gregory said.

“Also, repurposing materials is very in; I had amazing modern Adirondack chairs built from old wood pallets that were lying around at our depot.”

Regardless of budget size, landscaping and real-estate experts agree that it’s often best to start with the basics: a clean, manicured lawn, and a well-kept outdoor space.

“I always argue that the exterior of a home is its first impression,” Gregory said. “Whether you’re looking to sell it or just entertaining friends and family, within seconds visitors will develop an opinion of the attention to detail, personality, and cleanliness of the homeowners.”

Big additions like outdoor kitchens and living rooms can hugely increase value and appeal, as these types of projects really extend the living space of a home, Grabowski said.

“But at the very least, a seller should ensure their lawn is always neatly kept, green and free of weeds.

“The most important thing is that the space is welcoming and fairly easy to maintain,” she said. “A great deck with some lighting, and flowers can create a beautiful outdoor retreat that any potential buyer will really appreciate.”
