April on track to set record for rain

Laval to be included as eligible city to obtain financial aid for water-hit homes

- Postmedia News

The incessant rains that have sparked at least one state of emergency in a Montreal area municipality and a network of sand bank distribution points tapered off late Friday afternoon.

But showers were expected to resume Friday night and riverfront neighbourhoods extending from Rigaud to Laval remained vigilant as water levels continue to rise despite the expected break in precipitation.

In Laval, a section road in front of 9240 Mille-Îles Blvd. was closed as a precaution, as flooding eroded soil alongside the thoroughfare, but Friday night was partially reopened. The condition of the road will be re-evaluated on Monday.

City officials announced Friday Quebec’s Public Security ministry would be including Laval as one of the eligible cities to obtain flood-related financial assistance for those homes affected by flooding April 19-20, and that flooding had already been reported on some streets, on properties and in homes, particularly in the Chomedey, Îles Laval, Laval-sur-le-Lac, Laval-Ouest and Fabreville districts.

In Montreal, authorities warned water levels on the Rivière-des-Prairies, Lake St-Louis and Lake of Two Mountains are expected to rise over the course of Friday and invited residents living in at risk areas to contact 311 if they wanted to obtain sandbags.

In Rigaud, a state of emergency sparked by flooding and declared Thursday remained in effect early Friday morning, with residents in affected areas being ordered to leave their homes and inform the city of their whereabouts once they had left.

As of Friday evening, the town was saying the situation had stabilized, despite water levels at the Carillon dam that hit their highest levels in 55 years. Officials said most residents heeded evacuations, but members of 139 households did not.

In Senneville, the shutdown of l’Anse-à-l’Orme Rd. because of flooding was still in force.

Saturday’s weather outlook calls for a mix of clouds and rain and a 40-per-cent chance of showers.
