My Tool Box: The Building Blocks to Self-Care — McGill University Health Centre’s chronic disease self-management program will resume in May. They offer practical and interactive workshops developed by the University of Stanford to help individuals (and caregivers) manage the day-to-day challenges of living with chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, cancer, asthma, fibromyalgia, hypertension and arthritis. NOVA is in need of volunteer cooks to prepare a light lunch to be served to a group of elderly individuals suffering from cognitive deficiency. The meals are prepared at their Adult Day Centre located in Beaconsfield, Tuesday to Friday. The centre provides a respite to caretakers. Volunteers will need to come for a personal interview as well as fill out a background security check. Minimum age 21. Various Meals on Wheels kitchens
are looking for volunteer cooks, drivers, deliverers, dishwashers and shoppers. There are 12 kitchens throughout the West Island so volunteers do not need to go far. The meals are prepared and delivered Tuesday and Thursday mornings and early afternoon. All volunteers are scheduled to help once a month. Minimum age 18. The Beaconsfield Library is starting

A young 16-year-old Dollard girl with a moderate to severe intellectual disability would like a volunteer to walk/ supervise her at the local pool. Being non-verbal, she would like to go out to the mall, short walks, watch movies, etc. A Greek-speaking Dollard woman in her 80s is looking for a female volunteer to break her isolation. She is a very friendly, engaging lady who loves chatting about her family and about her life. She would like someone to join her for an occasional coffee or for a walk outside. A Pierrefonds woman in her 70s is looking for a female volunteer to accompany her on outings. She is very friendly and approachable and loves knitting, sewing and listening to the radio.
She has some mobility issues and would love to go out for a coffee once in a while. A Greek-speaking Pierrefonds
woman in her late 80s would appreciate a volunteer to keep her company in the house. She lives with her son due to her Alzheimer’s but gets lonely while he is away. Her first language is Greek but understands and speaks some English. Activities she would like to do are to go out for short walks, friendly conversations, cooking, and go for coffee. An Italian and English speaking
elderly gentleman living in Pierrefonds would like to be matched with a male volunteer for social and practical support. He enjoys taking, going on walks and buying fresh fruits and vegetables occasionally. He has moderate Alzheimer’s. A Pierrefonds man in his 60s with some health problems and back pain would like a volunteer to walk with him, go out occasionally, and talk with him. He loves art very much although has some difficulty practicing due to hand tremors. He uses a cane when walking as well. An elderly Lachine man in his 80s would appreciate having a male volunteer to support him socially through occasional visits or outings. He likes knitting and going for walks but has a hard time socializing in groups because of his hearing aids.
