Beloeil man faces charges in deadly school bus crash on Highway 116 last year

-

A 20-year-old Beloeil man is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and injuries a little over a year after a crash between a car and a school bus left one person dead and 25 injured.

Marc-Antoine Landry was arrested by officers of the Régie intermunicipale de police Richelieu-Saint-Laurent on Wednesday and charged on Thursday. A warrant for his arrest had been issued last week.

The arrest follows a collision on Highway 116 on May 13, 2016, that saw a car slam into a school bus carrying 40 students. Police said Friday the delay in filing charges was due in large part to the time it took accident scene technicians to reconstruct the circumstances of the crash.

The impact of the crash was such that the bus flipped over and the car was completely destroyed. The passenger in the car, an 18-year-old woman, died in the crash. Landry and 25 passengers in the bus were injured, six of them seriously.

The crash shut down the highway for six hours and required first-responders from the Régie intermunicipale de police Richelieu-Saint-Laurent, the Beloeil and Mont-Saint-Hilaire fire departments and ambulances from throughout the region to deal with the emergency.

Landry was also in court on Friday to face charges of mischief and uttering threats in a separate incident that took place in late April.
