FIVE FRESH FACES AT THIS YEAR’S JAZZ FEST

-

Shabaka and the Ancestors: (June 29 at 10:30 p.m. at Gesù, 1200 Bleury St., $41.35). London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings tore through last year’s festival with his psychelectronica group the Comet Is Coming. This side project finds him teaming up with a group of South African musicians, bringing a stirring spirit of melody, groove and adventure to their 2016 album Wisdom of Elders.

Kandace Springs: (June 30 at 6 p.m. at Club Soda, 1225 St-Laurent Blvd., $38.25 to $40.25). The Nashville singer-songwriter’s debut album, Soul Eyes, produced by Larry Klein (Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot) and released last year on Blue Note, shows an intuitive ability to mix R&B and jazz influences with classic songwriting. Prince was a fan.

Jacob Collier: (July 1 at

6 p.m. at Club Soda, $35.25 to $37.25). The British singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist shot to fame in 2013 with viral covers including Stevie Wonder’s Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing. He has earned the approval of Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock, while his 2016 debut In My Room won two Grammys in the jazz categories of best arrangement, including one for a playful rethink of the Flintstones theme song.

Too Many Zooz: (July 5 at 9 p.m. at L’Astral, 305 SteCatherine St. W., $33 to $36). New York saxophone punk Leo Pellegrino has star power — and dance moves — to spare. He lifted his other band Lucky Chops to viral fame for their wild subway busking videos, and brought the party to the group’s fun-filled free-stage shows at last year’s jazz fest. He returns with his electro-inspired three-piece Too Many Zooz: sax, trumpet and drums pumping out funky club jams like nobody’s business. Woot!

Shyre: (July 7 at 9 p.m. at L’Astral, $28 to $30). Montreal singer-pianist Sarah Rossy’s pastoral folk songs drew sold-out crowds in her three intimate sets at the Savoy during last year’s jazz fest. She and her band (which includes violin, viola, bass and drums) are back at a bigger venue, with a debut album due later this year.
