Player’s Brain clinic focuses on the cerebral side of soccer

Ever wonder what goes through a soccer player’s brain?

Veteran professional player, coach and former Gazette soccer analyst Lloyd Barker is hoping to answer that question with an innovative coaching seminar appropriately called the Player’s Brain.

“I thought about running a conventional coaching clinic, but then I came up with the idea of putting top players on the pitch in choreographed game conditions,” Barker explained.

“The player will be miked up and, as he makes decisions on the field, he will explain why he’s doing things, why he’s moving to a certain position, why he’s making a certain pass.

“This concept goes beyond coaching,” added Barker. “It will be of value to anyone who wants a better understanding of the beautiful game, whether it’s a coach, a player or a fan.”

Barker has enlisted a roster of talented players who will offer insights into how they process the game tactically and how they execute position-specific skills during a game.

The lineup includes four current members of the Montreal Impact. Evan Bush, who has posted shutouts in each of the past two Impact games, will talk about handling crosses and clearing the ball. Belgian international Laurent Ciman and Hassoun Camara will offer insights into a defender’s responsibilities, and Impact captain Patrice Bernier will explain why midfielders are regarded as the engine of a team.

Others offering their expertise are former MLS most valuable player Dwayne De Rosario, former Canadian international Ali Gerba, former Cuban international Eduardo Sebrango and Olympic bronze medallist Josée Bélanger, who will offer a female perspective.

The Player’s Brain will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, from 5-9 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Soccerplexe Catalogna in Lachine. The cost of a weekend pass for individuals is $175, and the team price for groups of 10 or more is $125 per person.

Participants who register early will have an opportunity to meet the players on Saturday.

“The interest has been good and we’re filling up quickly but there’s still room,” said Barker.
