Fry to return to the Shaw

-

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ONT. Stephen Fry is returning to the Shaw Festival with a starring role in a story of his own creation.

The celebrated British actor, writer and comedian will appear in Mythos: A Trilogy — Gods. Heroes. Men, based on Fry’s upcoming book of the same name. It centres on a trilogy of plays telling the stories of ancient Greece with Fry’s comical take on mythological figures.

Mythos will be a stand-alone piece, but theatre-goers will be able to see the production in one, two or three parts. Shaw Festival artistic director Tim Carroll will direct the world première of the production during the 2018 season.

Fry was nominated for a Golden Globe for his title role in 1997’s Wilde, and has appeared in films including Gosford Park and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. He was also the voice of the Cheshire Cat in last year’s film adaptation of Alice Through the Looking Glass. Fry has his stamp on the current Shaw season with its current revival of musical comedy Me and My Girl, which he updated in 1986.

“The festival’s renowned history of bringing together spectacle, story and theatrical flair should be the perfect fit for these ancient, yet stunningly contemporary, stories. I am positively dribbling and drooling with anticipation,” Fry said in a statement.

Mythos: A Trilogy — Gods. Heroes. Men joins The Magician’s Nephew among the shows confirmed for the Shaw Festival’s 2018 season.
