Montreal to build recycling sorting centre in Lachine
Designed to handle at least 100,000 tonnes a year
The city of Montreal’s executive committee approved a $49-million contract for a new sorting centre for recyclables in the Lachine borough.
The contract was awarded to La Compagnie de recyclage de papiers M D Inc., which will design, build and operate the facility.
The sorting centre for recyclable materials is part of the master plan for waste management.
The new facility will be able to handle at least 100,000 tonnes per year.
The city wants it to be LEED GOLD certified, so that it is in compliance with the sustainable development policy for 2016-2020.
“As a leader in sustainable development, the city of Montreal joins forces with those of other municipalities in Quebec and is committed to making the necessary efforts to achieve the objectives of the Quebec government’s action plan within the framework of the Quebec Residual Materials Management Policy,” Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre said in a statement.
“The construction of a new sorting centre in the west of Montreal is another step toward increasing the recycling rate of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal, and achieving the goal of recovering 70 per cent.”
The centre will have a state-ofthe-art sorting and cleaning system for glass, donated to the city by Éco Entreprises Québec, the organization responsible for selective collection financing in Quebec.
“In conjunction with British partner Krysteline Technologies and Quebec-based Machinex, the system will be integrated right from the design phase of the sorting centre, a first in North America,” said Maryse Vermette, president and CEO of ÉEQ.
“With this investment of more than $3 million, we are proud to allow this sorting centre to produce high-quality glass that will find a second life in a multitude of applications, including the production of new glass containers, abrasives and cementitious addition.”
