Stop separating kids from parents

-

Re: “Pleas to let parents join airlifted sick kids ignored, health workers say” (Montreal Gazette, Jan. 25)

I’m delighted that Health Minister Gaétan Barrette says he’s open to reconsidering the policy of separating babies and children from their parents and putting them on planes to whoknows-where to be poked and prodded by strangers who don’t speak their language.

There are those who insist that at least the children are getting the best possible care. How can that be when a critical component of that care — the presence of a parent or trusted loved one — is missing ? It’s barbaric and backward.

The policy must change. Otherwise, we can just add this situation to our collective shame over the treatment of Indigenous Peoples.
