1 Weekend matinees

This is the first game of what has become a Canadiens tradition of playing back-to-back matinees at the Bell Centre on Super Bowl weekend with the Ottawa Senators the visitors on Sunday (1 p.m., SN, RDS, TSN Radio 690). The Canadiens started playing the Super Bowl weekend games in 1991. “I think it adds a little bit more excitement, so it’s kind of nice,” the Canadiens’ Brendan Gallagher said about the matinee games. “I like waking up and not really thinking about it … just going to the rink and playing. It kind of reminds you of when you were younger.”

2 The goalies

Canadiens coach Claude Julien has decided to split the goaltending duties for the weekend games with Antti Niemi getting the start against the Ducks and Carey Price facing the Senators. Niemi has a 1-1-1 record with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage since being claimed by the Canadiens off waivers from Florida Nov. 14. Price has a 14-19-4 record with a 2.97 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. Niemi stopped 24 of 26 shots in his last start, a 3-2 win over the Capitals on Jan. 19. Price stopped 28 of 30 shots in Thursday night’s 2-0 loss to the Hurricanes in Carolina. Ducks goalie Ryan Miller stopped 30 of 32 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Senators Thursday night in Ottawa.

3 Help from the farm

The Canadiens, who rank 29th in offence and have scored two or fewer goals in 29 of 51 games this season, called up forward Nikita Scherbak from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on Friday afternoon. Scherbak, who was the Canadiens’ first-round draft pick (26th overall) at the 2014 NHL Draft, had 7-23-30 totals in 24 games with the Rocket.

4 Molson Cup winner

Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty will be presented with the Molson Cup for January before Saturday’s game based on the three-star selections during the month. Pacioretty posted 8-3-11 totals during 11 games in January and leads the Canadiens in scoring this season with 16-15-31 totals, followed by Alex Galchenyuk (1216-28), Brendan Gallagher (18-9-27) and Jonathan Drouin (7-19-26).

5 Watch these Ducks

Centre Rickard Rakell leads the Ducks in scoring with 18-21-39 totals. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Swede was selected by the Ducks in the first round (30th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. That’s the same year the Canadiens selected defenceman Nathan Beaulieu — now a Buffalo Sabre — with the 17th overall pick. Ducks centre Ryan Getzlaf has 6-25-31 totals despite missing 24 games due to injuries, including a facial fracture.
