New game plan: copy the Leafs
Re: “Habs need more than an ‘attitude adjustment’ ” (Stu Cowan, April 10)
I’m astonished by what I’m reading and hearing from general manager Marc Bergevin and owner Geoff Molson regarding the Canadiens’ terrible performance this year.
Then I remembered what a university professor told me years ago — when a previously dominant organization is in crisis, senior managers will often put their efforts on retaining control above all else, and refuse to acknowledge their own failures.
We’ve seen this in the retail sector for years; now it seems to be happening with one of the most successful sports franchises in history.
It should be noted the Toronto Maple Leafs finally recognized this and made significant changes, starting at the top, with new personnel and a change in philosophy that acknowledges changes to the game itself.
In the time that Bergevin and Molson have been in charge of the Habs, the Leafs have gone from one of the worst teams to one of the best, playing an exciting brand of hockey dedicated to winning.
This dedication to excellence has spread throughout the organization, from player development to minor league success. None of this can be said about Bergevin’s or Molson’s tenure with the Canadiens.
And don’t get me started with the Vegas Golden Knights, coached by an former Habs assistant coach!
No, it’s not the attitude in the dressing room that needs changing.
