West Island students show support in wake of hockey team tragedy
Students at Clearpoint Elementary School in Pointe-Claire are paying tribute to the Humboldt Broncos players, coaches and a journalist who lost their lives in a devastating road crash Friday. On Monday, students wore hockey jerseys or school shirts and collected $2 donations. More than $800 was collected over the last two days to help the families cope with their loss and the plan is to send a cheque by the end of the week.
The students also made posters and wrote letters to show their support for the Broncos community.
“We are thinking of the team, their families and the organization and although we cannot imagine what they are experiencing, we want to send our love and compassion,” Clearpoint principal Rachel Wilson said in a Facebook post.
The Lester B. Pearson School Board also posted a letter to the community in mourning. It reads, in part:
“The Lester B. Pearson School Board wishes to extend its deepest sympathies and condolences to all those affected by this painful tragedy.
“Despite the distance between our provinces, we are bonded by our common values of family, community, teamwork and sportsmanship. The Broncos, their supporters, and all of Humboldt perfectly exemplify these values. We are moved by your strength and resolve during such difficult and unforeseen circumstances.
You are not alone.”
