Quebec Health Minister Gaétan Barrette announced a $95 million expansion project of the Lachine Hospital last Thursday.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2020, and is to be completed by the spring 2023.

“The Lachine Hospital project has just taken an important step forward, of which we are very proud,” Barrette said.

“This project is directly in line with recent government actions aimed at offering the best possible health care and social services infrastructures across Quebec.”

Once the project is completed, the number of beds in care units will increase from 52 to 60, all in single-patient rooms.

The number of beds in the palliative care unit will increase from five to 10, and those in the surgery unit from five to 16.

The project will see the construction of a new pavilion that will house functional units, including the emergency room, intensive care, the medical day unit, the hospitalization, medical and surgery units, as well as palliative care.

The first and fifth floors of the existing building will also be renovated.

“The announcement that this project is becoming a reality is excellent news for people living in the electoral division of Marquette and the surrounding area,” said François Ouimet, the local MNA for Marquette.

“The advantages it will provide are manifold: in addition to correcting many problems related to the age of the building, which was built in 1939, it will, in particular, enhance clinical efficiency and care co-ordination when taking charge of users,” Ouimet said.
