The West Island Palliative Care Residence is looking for volunteer cooks. Volunteers assist the chef in all aspects of making meals for the residents, visitors, the staff and volunteers. Food preparatio­n, service and cleanup are a team effort. Minimum age: 16.

Strangers in the Night is hosting a dinner and concert under the stars on Aug. 25 to raise funds for three community-based, not-for-profit organizati­ons in the West Island: The Miriam Foundation, Lymphoma Canada, and the West Island Woman’s Shelter. This year, our guests will be entertaine­d by Boy George and the Culture Club, at the gala’s new venue in Pierrefond­s. 75 volunteers are needed to fill these roles: greet guests, busboy/busgirl, parking attendants, backstage crew and green team. Shifts are from 3 p.m. to midnight. Minimum age: 18.

The CHSLD Bayview needs volunteers to help run fun activities and/or do friendly visits with their residents. Ages: 15 and up.

The Sian Bradwell 30th annual softball tournament for the Montreal Children’s Hospital takes place Aug. 2-5, and they need 20 volunteer cooks, cashiers and bartenders for various Kirkland parks. Minimum age: 18.

The West Island Mission is gearing up for its annual Backpack event and many volunteers are needed. On Friday (Aug. 10), volunteers are needed to transport items, package the backpacks and set up the gym. Then on Saturday (Aug. 11), volunteers would help distribute the supplies to recipients as they come to pick them up, as well as the cleanup and transport of unused supplies back to our warehouse location. Minimum age: 16.
