Vernissage Sept. 27, 5 p.m.-8 p.m. A tandem exhibition by two Montreal artists takes the viewer on a virtual journey into their inner and outer worlds. Looking at art is like travelling. Every image becomes a signpost as we follow the artist’s footsteps into our own inner space and imagination. The dual presentation by two diverse artists, Dorothy Grostern, painter, and Shaune Thompson, photographer, offers just that kind of an experience, weaving a narrative along parallel yet entirely different trajectories. MONTREAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS Liminals: A Para-fiction of Transcendence by Jeremy Shaw

MMFA - Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion – Level S2, 1380, rue Sherbrooke Ouest Aug. 28-March 24 Tuesday-Sunday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

The Museum is pleased to present the North American premiere of the video installation Liminals by Jeremy Shaw; a Vancouver artist who lives and works in Berlin. This immersive, multi-sensory experience is made possible for our visitors thanks to a generous loan from the Canadian collector Bruce Bailey. Liminals made a notable impact when it was presented at the main exhibition of the 2017 Venice Biennale, curated by Christine Macel, Chief Curator of the Centre Pompidou. The exhibition was divided into several themes and Liminals was shown in the Dionysian Pavilion, emphasizing the playfulness and sensual evocations of the piece.

Resplendent Illuminations: Books of Hours from the 13th to the 16th Century in Quebec Collections MMFA - Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion – Level S2, 1380, rue Sherbrooke Ouest

Sept. 4-Jan. 6 Tuesday-Sunday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

This is the very first exhibition at the MMFA dedicated to books of hours in medieval and Renaissance art. It is an opportunity to discover an overlooked legacy through a remarkable selection of illuminations and bound manuscripts conserved in Quebec, dating from the 13th to the 16th century. Books of hours were created for laypeople and were popularized by the Christian faithful. These manuscripts were for the most part personalized and illuminated with miniature paintings – or illuminations – illustrating the life of Christ, the saints or the Virgin Mary. They included a calendar of holy and religious feasts, passages from the gospels and prayers. The result of extensive academic research, the exhibition includes more than 50 artifacts (sheets, complete manuscripts, prints) offering a closer look of these treasures, which come from seven collections. An exhibition organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with Université du Québec à Montréal and McGill University.

Connections: Our Artistic Diversity Dialogues with Our Collections MMFA - Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion – Level S2, 1380, rue Sherbrooke Ouest

Sept. 4-May 31 Tuesday-Sunday: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Wednesday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, the MMFA invited seven artists representing our cultural diversity to create a work inspired by its collection of world cultures. Emerging or established artists were invited to create a work representing transhistorical and contemporary dialogue in connection with the MMFA’s collection of Ancient African, Asian, Mediterranean, Oriental and pre-Columbian art. The winners of the competition will be announced shortly and their works will be displayed as a prelude to the new wing dedicated to world cultures and togetherness. This major reinstallation of the collections is planned for 2019, on the upper level of the Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion. Alexander Calder: Radical Inventor MMFA - Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion – Level 2, 1380, rue Sherbrooke Ouest

Sept. 21-Feb. 24 Tuesday-Sunday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is presenting the first major Canadian retrospective of Alexander Calder (1898-1976) to highlight all the many facets of the career of the American “who made sculpture move.” Designed by the MMFA, the exhibition Alexander Calder: Radical Inventor will present 150 works and archival documents to portray the full scope of this artist’s extraordinarily innovative multidisciplinary practice: from his wire drawings to his paintings, and from his invention of the mobile to his monumental sculptures.
