In the late 1800s, U.S. con­ser­va­tion­ists re­al­ized that wild en­vi­ron­ments needed pro­tec­tion. In 1872, the world’s first na­tional park, Yel­low­stone, was es­tab­lished in the Rocky Moun­tains. To­day, about 12 per­cent of Earth’s sur­face is pro­tected by na­tional parks.
