For sale: collection of 55 VW buses

- ALEX REID

A Canadian collector is looking to get rid of the 55 Volkswagen buses he has accumulated, but wants to sell all of the vehicles as a single lot, for some US$350,000.

The ad points out the VW buses are of all types and styles, including bay-window buses, split-window models, and later Westfalia style buses.

While a sale like this is pretty unusual, the Kijiji listing sounds remarkably typical, with a handful of red-flag phrases pointing to the seller being difficult to communicate with, including “Will not respond to flakes with no money.” The seller also cautions would-be buyers that if they are flying in from overseas, “please be prepared to stay in hotel until funds clear my bank in order to release the vehicles for shipping.”

The buses are located on a rural property in Newmarket, about an hour north of Toronto. To see them for yourself you’ll need to pay an admission price like a museum. Yes, the seller will charge you $500 just to see them.

After you’ve paid the price to look at them, and you decide to buy them, well, that’s when the fun really begins. You’re going to find yourself in need of some serious logistics, since the seller is putting it on you to get all 55 of the VW buses out of there. And he won’t part them out or separate them, either — it’s all or nothing.

Despite the claim they are in “good restorable condition,” it’s clear a few of the buses have rotted into the ground.
