A law based on ignorance
Re: “’We have found right balance’ on religious symbols: CAQ” (Montreal Gazette, March 29)
This is an appalling path. If Quebec wants to be neutral, it should treat all Quebecers the same. Quebec collects taxes from everyone, regardless of their garb. All Quebecers should be able to participate in the full spectrum of Quebec life. This oils the cogs of a diverse, democratic society. This law is based on ignorance and empowers those who seek to do harm. As a secular feminist, I believe everyone should have the choice to follow their personal paths — without additional impediments. Bill 21 cleaves society, reduces opportunities and hampers the ability to support one’s family. The “grandfather clause” offers a token crumb, and “the other” will not be eligible to fill lost jobs.
