DIVING DEEP INTO GREEK HISTORY
Dry land got you down? Maybe it’s time to venture under the sea, under the sea. Darling it’s better down where it’s wetter — take it from me.
Little Mermaid references aside, travellers to Greece will soon be able to visit some of the country’s many ancient shipwrecks and underwater artifacts for the first time. The first to open will be the Peristera shipwreck, which dates back to the 5th century BC and is found near the northern island of Alonissos. It’s thought to have been an Athenian cargo ship and is the biggest of its era discovered to date.
“The goal is in the next two years to make the country’s shipwrecks visitable, but also to provide important information and raise awareness about underwater monuments,” said Konstantinos Stratis, deputy minister of culture and sports.
