Frederick (Ephraim) Weinstein was born in Montréal to Jeanette Weinstein, née Watson, and Volodya “Willy” Weinstein. He died at home. He attended Edward VII primary school and Baron Byng high school and went on to study mechanical engineering at McGill University; he received his MSc. from Birmingham University. Fred spent many years working on international engineering projects, including the port of Nava Sheva in India, and consulted extensively for the Asian Development Bank. He worked for various engineering firms before co-founding his own company, Weinstein Taylor Associates, with Andy Taylor in Toronto in 1987, specialising in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In the early nineties he adapted campus-style designs to create the PST system, which is now widely used in the industry. Fred was an avid swimmer and water polo player during his youth, and later developed a passion for bicycling, participating on several occasions in challenging randonnée rides in France and elsewhere. He was also a member of the Toronto Randonneurs. He was a lifelong socialist. He loved music, especially of the European romantic period and the traditional English folk song, and read long, difficult novels. He appreciated good food, exotic produce and foreign cuisines, but was happiest eating homemade fruit pie, because it reminded him of his days surveying in northern Québec. He is survived by Frances Newman, his steadfast partner of many decades; by his sister, Francie, with her partner, Shimon, and their children, Elisheva, Alexandra and Nili; by his children, Elka and Asa, with their partners, Ike and Meredith; by his stepchildren, Rafaël, Adam and Zoë, with their partners, Caroline, Maggie and Dinah; and by his grandchildren, Teddy, Gabriel, Sophie, Hella, Lucy, Samuel, Sapphire, Mahalia and Luke. He is also mourned by his in-laws, Eva and Fred Bild, and their children, Eva Rebecca, Maïa and Sarah; by Bogna; by fogel, River and Nadia; by Dianna, Imogen and Ursula. Thank you to Heather Ross and Ann Stewart, to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care—Ciara Whelan, Mary Halinen, Mario Valenzuela—and to Muhammed Daudpota. The funeral will take place on Thursday, August 8 at 10am, at St. James Cemetery, 635 Parliament Street, Toronto. No flowers please.
